Community Contributor – Renzo

Today we’re announcing a new type of post that you’ll see on RivalsofAether.com. One from contributors in our very own community sharing their stories, articles, videos, experiences, and expertise. If you’re interested in becoming a community contributor, leave a comment here or get in touch with us through any of our social media.

In the meantime, I’m proud to introduce our first community contributor below.

Hey everybody! My name is Renzo Salazar, I go by just Renzo as my tag in Rivals, and I’m from South Florida. I’ve been playing the game for a pretty long time. I got it the day it came out when I saw Dan post about it in /r/smashbros, and I’ve been hopeful for the game’s success ever since! I’m a long time Orcane main but love playing any character in friendlies.

A little over a year ago I was wondering how I could help the community even more (I attempted but failed to run a local scene in my region while also running the Florida Rivals of Aether discord, where other local scenes are present), when all of a sudden I had a genius idea.

What if someone went through and took all the popular twitch clips of the week, added some other user submitted clips, and put them into a weekly series!

So I’ve been doing that on and off for the past year, even though my upload schedule is a little inconsistent at times, I aim to release my videos anywhere from Sundays-Tuesdays.

You can find Renzo’s Community Twitch highlights on his social media above, as well as now featured here on RivalsOfAether.com as our first community contributor.

Genesis 6 Wrap Up

Genesis 6 is over, and with it Season 3 of the Rivals Championship Series. As we close the book on our latest year of competitive Rivals it’s always nice to take a look at how far we’ve come. Spoilers obviously abound in this article so make sure to only give this a read if you’re happy with finding out who won Genesis.

Some of the Rivals community at Genesis 6!

Our Season 3 Champion

Congratulations to Panda Global’s FullStream for his amazing losers side run at Genesis 6 that secured him the title of RCS Season 3 Champion. On top of this being our largest live event yet, FullStream took arguably the most difficult path through the final day, making this win a true testament to FullStream’s Rivals of Aether legacy.

Left: Windows, Center: FullStream, Right: Penguin

This Genesis is also the first time a previous champion has won again, making FullStream our only 2 time champion over all 3 years of the series. We also broke some other first-time records for Rivals with a singles prize pool of over $13,000 and more than 45,000 viewers watching the finals. We can’t thank our players, community, and fans enough for making this event a piece of Rivals history.

Players came from all over to compete, meet their Rivals friends, and test their skill in the RCS World Finals. We asked our photographer from last year, FS | Xenos, to once again to capture the Rivals event. Relive (or experience for the first time) the event through his fantastic album that covers all 3 days: xenosmccloud.com/ESPORTS/RoA-Gensix

Road to Season 4

Even though season 3 is over, we have plenty in store for 2019. At Genesis we announced that season 4 is coming this summer and opening with Smash’N’Splash 5.

In the meantime we’ll have 3 events during the offseason that will serve as Road to Season 4 events.

Winning any of these events will secure you a $500 travel voucher (on top of any other winnings) towards Smash’N’Splash 5. The first event coming up is Frostbite 2019 in just 2 weeks. With a $2,000 pot bonus, a travel voucher, and more on the line this will be one you won’t want to miss.

Rivals World Finals at G6: A Primer

For the last 2 years the Genesis series has been a standout tournament for competitive Rivals, and this year is no different. Once again this storied series will play host to the Rivals Championship Series World Finals. The culmination of eight months of competition as players from around the world vie for the title of champion.

Along with a record-breaking entrant count for the third year in a row, we’ve also topped our prize pool with more than $13,000 raised in our RCS compendium. If you’re an attendee, viewer, or new fan just tuning in this primer will guide you on how to enjoy Rivals at one of its biggest weekends in competitive gaming and what we’re doing to make it special.

How to Watch

Rivals will be featured on two different streams this event, with ShowdownGG handling the Friday and Saturday streams and VGBootCamp featuring us on the big stage Sunday in the Paramount Theatre.

It will be a great show either way, but if you’re in the area we recommend coming out to the gorgeous theatre to see the action live and support the competitors. A limited amount of tickets are still available at the door.

Make Your Mark at Genesis 6

In addition to everything else that comes with winning Rivals at Genesis, the victor will also earn the chance to work with the Rivals dev team on their own skin as part of the Make Your Mark series.

Players won’t want to miss their chance to ensure that they go down in Rivals history.

Special Brackets

Rivals Turbo
We’ll be featuring the first official Rivals Turbo mode tournament on stream Friday evening. After an exciting day of more serious events we’re opening entry to anyone who wants to compete with the super charged (and super silly) Rivals Turbo Mode. A $500 pot bonus is provided through the generosity of the community from the Genesis 6 compendium.

Rivals Amateur
Our second special bracket will be an amateur-only event happening after the completion of singles R1 pools on Saturday. Players can opt into this event after their pool throughout the weekend if their record is 0-2 or 1-2 in singles. The bracket will run from 2PM – 4PM with grand finals kicking off the beginning of the Saturday stream at 4PM.

Exclusive Merch

Since we don’t currently offer all of our products online, we’ll be bringing some of our rarer Rivals merch to the event. You can get your hands on these exclusives as well as some of our standard skins:

  • Official Rivals Logo Shirt
  • Official Pinny Arcade Orcane Pin
  • Rivals Character Keychains
  • BERRY BLAST Orcane Plush

Legal Stages Ruling

Rivals at Genesis 6 will be run using the standard RCS ruleset with one addition:
‘The Forest Floor’ stage will be banned during the singles event unless both players in a match agree to select it.

All that’s left to do at this point is bring the hype! Check out some of the ways our community is getting excited, and make sure to join us on stream for the event.

Rivals Rep: Esports Icon Contest

Today marks the start of season 4 ranked ladder play. Ranked progression in Rivals of Aether has just been given a complete overhaul, so if you missed the news make sure to check out our latest patch notes for the full details.

To make the start of this season even more exciting we’re announcing the return of a fan-favorite special event, the Rivals Rep Icon Contest, where you can help your favorite featured team get a skin in the game!

Show your team pride

Along with all of the new ranked features introduced yesterday, six new select team icons have joined the fray:

Flash Point Hound Esports ManDown Esports MVGLeague Tuxedo Esports Vireo.pro

These icons are more than just cosmetic. For the next three weeks, each win you earn on the ranked ladder while wearing a team’s icon will count as a point for that team. At the end of the event, the team with the most points will get a skin themed around their organization added to the game. You can keep track of how your favorite team is doing right here:

Final Score

We’ll be counting each game win toward the final score, not just set wins. This means that even if you lose the battle you can still win the war. The event runs until 11:59PM (PT) on December 12th, so choose a team to support and head to the battlefield today.

Edit: This post originally said the competition ended midnight on December 12th, which was a clerical error ending the event one day earlier than intended. This has been corrected by extending the competition one extra day to make the length a full 3 weeks.

MiNi is a volatile player, sometimes able to play above his skill level and others below. He’s familiar with many characters and isn’t afraid to play them in tournaments, even going as far as playing a different character every game in a set if he thinks a new strategy is more suitable. He’s traveled across the country to play and is still grinding for that first place trophy. His best finishes to date were Super Smash Con 2016 where he placed 3rd and CEO Dreamland where he defeated CLG | PewPewU on his way to secure 9th.

Quote_a is a long time Orcane player and constantly has his eye on the state of the game. He entered the competitive scene last summer and won a CCS within just a couple months of starting. Though he doesn’t have aspirations of taking home a trophy, he’s proof that you can play for fun and still take names. He’s caused some major upsets taking games off of Kisuno and Dolphinbrick to place 5th in RCS S1 #9.

Bumblebomb didn’t get to play in the RCS online events last season, but that was only because he spent most of his time casting the weeklies. When he’s not streaming or casting, Bumblebomb can be seen roaming exhibition and ranked clad in all green. His style of Kragg is more balanced, featuring solid fundamentals along with a flair for some dunking. Notable local wins includes defeating geqqo at Genesis 4 to place 17th.

Jorane put in work last season grinding in the weekly RCS series. He usually placed just inside or outside of the top 8 and was higher than top 32 in 10 out of the 12 weeklies. This dedication has put him solidly in the running when people search for good Absas to look up to. He’ll be traveling out to Bigger Balc on 5/27 to try and make his mark in RCS season 2.

Alexis is a very technical player who relies on spacing, mind-games, and patience to defeat his opponents. He was lauded during season 1 for his impressive clone play, often confusing the viewers as much as his opponents. Alexis is also able to perform at the local level and is currently the defending champion from Shine 2016. Notable victories include sets over Risky and Arcanine. He’s recently moved to SoCal which should let him travel to West Coast events much easier. We’ll also be seeing him at bigger balc.

JCOnyx is one of the best players from the Pacific Northwest and one of the best Absas when it comes to local tournaments. JCOnyx brings technical and punishing gameplay from his hardcore PM background, and loves labbing. You can see this reflected at the Washington locals he runs. He was able to secure 25th at Genesis 4.

Cupz has a storied history with Rivals, and has been involved in everything from the earliest tournaments to starting ICE. This crew of top players are mostly from the Pacific Northwest, and has turned the region into what is arguably the most concentrated area of Rivals’ talent. Though he doesn’t often play online, Cupz performs at local events and locked himself in for 13th place at Genesis 4 and 7th at PAX West.

Sino is a deadly Zetterburn with a stylish streak. Known as much for his skill as his combo videos he has the potential to contend with the top players. His strongest finish was at G4 where he placed 13th and defeated Mini, Bumblebomb, and Tandori. If he’s able to play more in online events I predict we could easily see him climbing the ranks.
