RCS Season 2 Event dates, prizes, and points structure

I promised we’d be back with details and today I’m here to deliver – with lots of tables. Don’t worry though, they’re the kind of tables with good stuff inside instead of boring things like annual report data. Alternatively, you can always keep up to date on the RCS over at our circuit page on smash.gg. Let’s kick it off with our summer schedule!

Summer Schedule

These offline events are all big tournaments or cons that are a ton of fun. If you can only make it to one this summer and want to meet some of the devs, we’d recommend Super Smash Con as we’ll be able to attend that one personally. As Rivals registration for events open, we’ll be adding them to our RCS season 2 circuit schedule.

Date Offline Majors
5/12 – 14 BAM 9
5/27 – 28 Bigger Balc
8/5 – 6 LTC5*
8/10 – 13 Super Smash Con*
8/25 – 27 Shine

*Rivals bracket registration is not available on smash.gg yet for these two events. We figured even though registration wasn’t available yet it’s better to know these are coming up so you can make plans.

Here’s the schedule for our online monthlies for all 3 regions. Part of our reason for moving to monthlies (instead of the weeklies from season 1) was to put less emphasis on grinding.  These should make it easier for players to plan ahead and attend as well as still allowing community run events to flourish without the RCS dominating every weekend.

You definitely won’t want to miss these since they’ll be our biggest streams of the month, get you rewards, and just be a general good time for the community to come together.

Date NA Monthlies
5/20 Road to Shine NA RCS May Monthly
6/10 Road to Shine NA RCS June Monthly
7/22 NA RCS July Monthly
8/19 NA RCS August Monthly
Date EU Monthly
5/28 EU RCS May Monthly
Date AU Monthly
5/24 AU RCS May Monthly

Prizes

Now on to the extra good stuff. We’ve got a bunch of new skins and other rewards planned for this season, starting off with Champion Wrastor and Champion Kragg.  Champion Etalus will also be making a return, but this time he’s stepping off of his pedestal and letting other Rivals take the limelight.

Champion Wrastor
Champion Etalus
Champion Kragg

To get Champion Etalus

  • Simply sign up for the first time for any RCS Season 2 event that you’re eligible for (i.e. stick with your region).

For Champion Wrastor

  • Champion Wrastor will be awarded to the top 8 of each online monthly.

For Champion Kragg

How to get Champion Kragg differs for each region, but the idea is the same across the board. For each monthly event that hits a certain amount of registrants, every player in the tournament will receive a Champion Kragg skin! This applies for players making good efforts to attend, so tell your friends to give a tournament a try so we can break these numbers!

  • NA Monthly must hit 250+ participants
  • EU Monthly must hit 125+ participants
  • AU Monthly must hit 75+ participants

Points structure

Last but not least, here are the exact amounts of circuit points players can earn from participating in RCS events.  Standings will be tracked on our circuit page on smash.gg. Our point structure last season worked well so we’ll be keeping it similar this year.

Circuit point standings award travel vouchers at the end of the season to our finals event as well as other perks. For example, players higher in circuit points may be selected for invitationals as well as being a good pickup for upcoming Rivals fantasy drafts.

Announcing the Rivals Championship Series: Season 2

Rivals players around the world – today we’re pleased to announce the return of the Rivals Championship Series!

For a recap on the S1 finals check out Adam Carra’s Genesis 4 story or this brilliant article by Sam Foxall.
After an amazing first season ending with our $10k finals at Genesis 4, it’s time to dust off your controllers again for the second season of our official tournament series.  If you’re a new player or haven’t heard of the Rivals Championship Series before, don’t worry. Read on to learn what the RCS means for you as a player and to the Rivals community as a whole.

The Circuit

ranked-trophyAt its core, the Rivals Championship Series is our premiere circuit for players who want to test their skills against the best. Players from around the globe are invited to battle for points, prizes, and the glory that comes with being the RCS champion.

Each month from May – December of 2017 will have an online RCS monthly. In addition to these online events, certain large offline events will also be marked as a part of the RCS schedule. Each player that participates in these events will earn prizes and points based on standings.

We’re expanding to 3 regions this season – North America and Europe are returning from Season 1 and we’re also adding Australia as a region. At the end of the circuit the top 4 players from NA and top player in EU and AU will receive travel vouchers towards our final event. Last year that was Genesis 4 with a prize pool of over $10k. We aren’t announcing the finals location yet, but it is planned for early 2018 and is set to be the biggest Rivals event ever.

Road to Shine

This year we’ll also be raising the stakes for a few of our RCS monthlies. We’re jumping right into it for season 2 and teaming up with Big Blue Esports for the first two NA monthlies to add additional prizes. This means the first two NA monthlies will also act as Road to Shine qualifiers, where the top 8 of both get admitted to compete in a separate 16 player bracket this June. The winner will be flown out to Boston this August for Shine 2017!

The Community

Champion KraggNo matter your skill level, we want all players to feel at home in the RCS. We’re encouraging players to come hang out on twitch and discord during monthlies to make it as much of a meetup as it is a tournament. We plan to roll out fantasy drafts, new community rewards for participating, and all kinds of fun stuff.  If you plan to play in just one online Rivals event each month – make sure it’s an RCS monthly!

Let’s start off RCS Season 2 with a bang!

Community Roundup 5/5/2017

Welcome back for the latest community roundup. Here we highlight our favorite fan-made Rivals stuff, from the lowliest memes to art of the highest order. Read on for our favorite music, art, general community happenings, and more.

MUSIC

IN-GAME

Corkxx shows us the work he’s put in for the speedrunning community to get his run down to 42 seconds on Forsburn. If you want some tips on getting gold for Forsburn’s story mode, definitely give this a watch. Also make sure to check out the #speedruns channel in the discord.

ProDoubleSushi teaches some new players about the finer things in life. And when asked if he has any mercy left in his Zetterburn heart, the answer (at least from that clip) was probably:

Here TheFailWhale shows us the legendary Absapult (capable of throwing a 90 kg projectile over 300 meters).

Mephiles takes the wheel and decides “Nonono we’re going THIS way”.

Solar gets the best of Tandori with this Kragg surprise attack descriptively titled “tempestpeak.mp4”.

JarekBloodDragon and Jetsreym are called back to their people.

IRL

If you haven’t heard the news yet, MSB (a top Kragg player) has been picked up by Fable esports. Head over to their twitter and give them a follow to show that we appreciate the support for the Rivals scene.

Here’s a shot from a Niagara playgroup’s first official Rivals tournament. Always great to see scenes popping up as the community grows.

That’s it for this week! Let us know in the comments if we missed any of your favorites, and make sure to give the creators some props.

Community Roundup 4/21/2017

Happy Friday everyone!

We’re back with another community roundup. Community roundups highlight our favorite fan-made Rivals stuff, from the lowliest memes to art of the highest order. Or maybe that should be, “from the lowliest art to memes of the highest order”? Anyway, read on for some good stuff spanning from Rivals videos to trap music.

ART

Here’s a cool sketch from ZomboGrub of Abyss Zetterburn looking appropriately evil. Definitely don’t want to get hit by that downStrong.

Tandori made top 8 of CEO Dreamland last weekend, and GenkiGoth Studios (in the artist alley) made him this awesome spray canvas to celebrate.

Samantha took this picture of the original Rivals pins that NekoCrispy made. They were also selling these at CEO Dreamland but if you want to pick some up for yourself now, you can get them on their etsy store here:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/511545370/rivals-of-aether-225-buttons

/u/boawboaw built this giant Maypul in Minecraft. They also put together a Wrastor sprite which works perfectly since 1 block = 1 pixel. Will we see any other Rivals stages or characters in Minecraft in the future?

Everyone knows Kragg is a baller, so /u/Conga-Heli made this to remind us of that feeling you get when you chain 6 side B’s.

VIDEOs

DolphinBrick is back and looking as good as ever. Here he’s worked up another Orcane video that sheds some light on Orcane’s tricky recovery. DBrick’s video is concise, well-made, and there’s no way you won’t learn something from this even as a long time Orcane player.

If you missed CEO Dreamland, Jarek4Gaming has got you covered. He put together another great highlight video from last weekend that covers some of the best games from the event if you don’t want to watch all two days of VODS.

MUSIC

jtbs and Troy L. have taken one of flashy’s songs in a new direction, and it’s turned out pretty sweet. Definitely not a genre you see Rivals being sampled in often.

QueenMeteor’s put together a new arrangement of one of my favorite tracks from the OST, Lightning Pandemonium.

CLIPS

This clip tells the sad, sad tale of Kenneth’s Orcane. Thinking he’s won the battle he instead finds himself in one of Kragg’s insidious traps…

Here’s Menace13 putting the pain on JFMHunter. Poor guy just can’t get out 🙁

That’s it for this week! Let us know in the comments any of your favorites that we missed, and make sure to give the creators some props.
